why choose construction?

Why Choose a career in construction?

Taken from "BUILD YOUR FUTURE"  book, by Craig Manning:

  • Job opportunities:
  • Many employers, will recruit their employees straight out of the construction training classes and offer them a job immediately. This pathway is attractive to some high school graduates because it allows them to start making a living in their field right away.

  • The skilled trades are a healthier job market than many other careers. Recent spikes in demand for single-family homes , for instance, have driven huge demand for workers in the construction industry, with many contractors and building companies unable to find enough employees with the skills the need.

  • Skilled trades professionals are high in demand. Some sources indicate that more than 2.5 million job openings were expected in the skilled trades in 2021 alone.

  • Most jobs in constructions offer huge opportunities for growth and advancement that are tied to higher-level job prospects and bigger salaries.

  • Job Stability:
  • There's no construction job that stops being important in the winter or the summer. Energy and electricity will always be important and have less of the season fluctuations compare to other jobs on the market. Independent constructors such as plumbers and electricians who own their own businesses, their work is stable because their services are available to a lot of different clients and customers throughout the year.

  • Skill Development:
  • Many people working in construction are extremely gifted in academic areas such as science or engineering. A career in construction might engage your interests or mesh with your skills better than something like pursuing a law degree.

  • Many skilled trades roles require training and certification and are offered for men and women. Although physical strength and stamina are essential for many jobs in construction, there are many positions in design, planning, estimating, project management, and engineering, that tend to be more office-based than field based.

  • Hands-on work:
  • Many of the construction jobs require a high level of understanding of key mathematical and scientific concepts. Working with your hands can actually make some of these concepts easier to understand by putting them to practical use, such as when building a house or installing a patio.

  • While many jobs in construction do involve potentially dangerous responsibilities, workers are trained to work in the safest work environment possible.

  • Construction workers enjoy the benefit of leaving the working site at the end of the day and have a clean break between work and home, maintaining work-life balance in their well-being selves.

  • Creativity and teamwork :
  • Constriction workers  enjoy working with teams of likeminded people to accomplish a shared goal.

  •  Competitive pay:
  • A well skilled construction worker can actually often command a higher salary and better benefits than a mid-level office employee. For instance, a more accurate way to compare salaries between four-year-college graduates and electrical workers would be to compare the salary that a graduate is making right out of collage to what an electrician is making after four years on the job.

  •  Careers such as electricians and plumbers, provide for generous salaries and considerable opportunity for growth and advancement.

  • Many jobs in construction pay extremely well, even for the entry-level jobs in the field. The good living wages that are often paired with competitive benefits, given the fact that most segments on construction have more jobs than workers to fill them. As employers compete for construction workers in the years to come, average salaries may only rise.

  • Potential for entrepreneurship:
  • Electricians, for instance, can start up as apprentices, advance to the journeyman level, and eventually earn master electrician status. This tiered credentialing is tied to higher-level job prospects and bigger salaries, and can open up doors to management roles or even entrepreneurship.

  • Job satisfaction:
  • The people who work in construction genuinely enjoy the work, the challenge, and they enjoy doing something that is an in-demand product.  their fulfillment comes not just from the work itself but from the career momentum they can build up for themselves. Most construction jobs offer huge opportunities for growth and advancement.

  • Career Progression:
  • As workers gain experience, expertise, confidence, and proficiency in the skills their career are built around, they make opportunities for themselves to move up in their career inside their companies or industries.

  • Impactful Work:
  • Many constructors take a great  pride in what they do, earn a good living to support themselves and their families.

  • Construction work has a great deal of positive value to our economy and our society. What could be more worthy of respect than that?
